My Goals for October

When the month comes to an end I like to think about setting goals for myself for the next month so that I’m always challenged.  I like to follow the S.M.A.R.T. rule for setting goals.  Meaning, goals should be Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and  Timely.  I thought of four specific things that I’d like to accomplish this month and I mapped out how I would make them happen.

Spend More Time Exploring

When I’m not working my day job, I tend to want to spend weekends at home cleaning or just puttering around.  Three weekends in a row, I stayed home and only left my home to walk the dogs or go to the grocery store.  There is so much I’m missing out on and I live in a relatively big city for crying out loud!  I’m about 3 1/2 hours from the mountains AND from the beach which really isn’t that far all things considered.  So each weekend in October I’m going spend more time exploring this great state I call home.  There’s ALWAYS some sort of festival or art show going on and the mountains this time of year are GORGEOUS!

Read Four Books

I’ve been reading the first Harry Potter book for the last 3 weeks.  That’s really pathetic because if I really wanted to, I could finish the book in one day.  So I’m going to commit to reading one book per week during the month of October.  I already have my list; FIRST, I’m going to finish Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K Rowling.  The SECOND book I’m going to read is “The Girl on the Train” by Paula Hawkins.  The movie is coming out and I want to have the book read before I go see it.  THIRD is “Inferno” by Dan Brown.  Again, I saw that the movie is coming out so I want to be prepared.  Finally, since it will be close to Halloween, the FOURTH book I want to read is “The Shining” by Stephen King.

Lose Six Pounds

Last month I did a post about my weight loss struggle and how I an’t seem to find motivation.  Well, I FINALLY found my motivation.  In April of next year I have a big conference that I have to attend for work.  Many of my friends and colleagues will be there and I haven’t seen most of them in over a year.  I would LOVE to be able to show up a few pounds lighter.  Taking into consideration the fact that during Thanksgiving and Christmas I’ll probably eat (and drink) like an A-hole, I calculate that if I lose six pounds per month I’ll be happy when I show up to the meeting.

Learn A New Skill

I love to learn new things.  In September I started learning more about photography and I’m continuing my online courses to improve my photography skills.  This month I want to learn hand lettering.  I’ve seen other bloggers and vloggers who have recently found this hobby and I feel like it’s something that’s right up my street.  Script is no longer taught in schools here which totally blows my mind.  I love how cards and letters written in script look and I would love to be able to hand write beautiful Christmas cards this year.  I guess you could call me “old school”.  Additionally, I think it would be really cool to use my own hand lettering in my blog…it’s really such a beautiful art form.

I Challenge You

Have you thought about setting goals for yourself this month?  If so, what are they and how do you hold yourself accountable?  I challenge you to take about 15 minutes out of your day to write out what you would like to accomplish this month.  Share them here if you’re so inclined.  I find that sharing my goals with the world holds me accountable.  Good luck and Happy October!
