My Dogs and How They Keep Me Chill

My day job is quite stressful and when I got home last night after an exceptionally stressful day, it occurred to me how much my dogs help keep me calm and chill.  I thought I’d introduce you to my furry gang and share some snippets of how they keep me from losing my mind.

Disclaimer:  This is going to be a very self-indulgent post where I show off my pets and talk about how wonderful they are.  But really…they are wonderful.  I have three dogs who are all very different.

First, there’s Hank.  I mean look at that squishy face!  Hank is a full blooded English Mastiff and he is quite the goof.  He weighs in at around 175 pounds but he’s so clunky and awkward, I just laugh watching him walk around the house.  I can always count on Hank for a laugh.  He tries to play ball with the other dogs (who are much smaller), and he literally “jumps” around the room for about two minutes, then finds a corner and passes out.  At night, Hank sleeps with me and my husband in our bedroom and he saws wood (snores) ALL.  NIGHT.  LONG.  Hank is the lover of the three, I may not get a lot of sound sleep at night, but I can always count on Hank for a cuddle and lots of slobbery kisses.

~Sullivan Monroe (Sully)~

The face says it all.  Sully is trouble with a capital “T”.  He’s a rambunctious little scamp who chases Hank around the house and abuses him whenever we’re not looking. We joke that he’s Hank’s chew toy but really, it’s the other way around.

Sully was adopted from the Humane Society here in Charlotte and has the funniest personality of the three. He’s spunky, yet cuddly, and he thinks he’s a Rottweiler.  He’ll chase down anything no matter how big it is.  At night, he fights with Penny for space ON ME in the chair (see above).  When it’s bedtime, he insists on sleeping under the covers curled up either in my armpit or the small of my back.

~Penelope Irene Miranda (Penny)~

Penelope.  Penny.  PAN!  This is my baby.  Penny is my ride or die.  She’s my therapist, she’s my protector, and she’s my best friend.  Penny is always so excited to see me.  In the mornings when I wake up…she jumps on me and whines (with happiness I assume).  My kids tell me that she knows when I’m coming home before my car pulls into the parking spot.  She jumps up and goes to the french doors to watch for me several minutes before I even drive up.

Penny snuggles me the most and is happiest when she’s curled up in the chair with me.  As a matter of fact, the picture above was taken one night when I was watching TV and looked down to see her looking at me like she loved me more than anything in the world.  I’m so glad I was able to capture a picture!

~They Keep Me Chill~

I’ve read many articles that say that having a pet makes you calmer, more outgoing, and friendlier.  I can believe that.  There are many days I come home from work stressed out beyond belief and after spending a few minutes with them I feel so much better.  Their love is unconditional, and they always want to be close to us.  Most importantly they don’t talk back!  How many people can we say are like that?  My family is very loving but oftentimes they are too busy doing other things to just sit and snuggle.  My 6-year-old daughter Sofia is likely to welcome the opportunity, but my 13-year-old son Kurt wants no part of it!

I’m a dog person and for me there’s no companionship like that of a dog; that’s probably why I have three…I’m needy that way.  For some of you, it may be your cats or horses or birds!

I would LOVE to see who your “best friends” are!  Post your pet pics on Twitter or Instagram and tag me @roseofthecity…I’d love to see your furry (or feathered) friends!
